Countdown to Moving Day

Bannister Moving & Storage has provided a list that will help you get well organized and prepared for this major moving day! Give yourself at least 30 days to prepare for your big move, make sure you pick a day for packing, loading and delivery. Try to avoid peak periods for example the last couple of weeks of the month; they just seem to be always the busiest time.
6-8 weeks prior to moving:
- Schedule a Garage sale for those times you don’t plan on taking. Or donate to charity and use for a tax deduction.
- Make sure your items are inventoried. Label most important items.
- Make your personal travel plans for your move, such as hotel reservations, and airline reservations , or if you’re driving set your road map route.
- Set a packing date ahead of time, unless you’re packing your own goods.
- Gather important papers such as: medical records, dental, birth certificates, school records, insurance information, baptism, marriage, wills, trust, immunization records, and pet records, of ownership and shot records.
- Arrange Disconnect Services a day or two after your move such as: Electric company, water, gas, telephone, internet provider, cable or satellite, Garbage Company, lawn or pool service, newspaper. Etc…
- Change of Address: Credit cards, friends and family, social security, magazine subscriptions, employers, insurance provider, accountant, investment companies, etc…
2-3 Weeks prior to moving:
- Call Family Physician make sure prescriptions are filled if needed.
- Update all policies, Insurance, Life, etc…
- Make separate arrangements for plants and pets.
- Dispose of any flammables, paints, paint removers, propane, gas tanks, aerosols, etc..
- Cancel membership cards.
1 week prior to moving:
- Dispose of food items or give away
- Defrost freezer, allow drying time to prevent mildew
- Collect important items like School records, office, etc…
- Have friends or family take care of children or pets the day of move
- Drain gas, oil from any type of power equipment
- Transfer funds from banking accounts to you new community bank
- Prepare you survival kit.
- Close out safe deposit boxes
- Take all Valuables with you!
- If driving have vehicle serviced
- Pack suitcases.
Moving Day!
- Remove and pack bedding and linens, dresser drawers
- Be available to check items on your inventory, as the driver leaves your house to be loaded into the moving vehicle. When cartons and household furnishings are all loaded into the moving truck, make sure you do a final walk through in your home to make sure every room is cleared out, to include all closets, and be sure to lock windows and doors. And make sure the driver gives you copies of all inventory and shipping documents, to include his name and contact number.
- Be sure to be present to check in each and every item that comes off of the truck and into your home on the day of move in. Be sure to compare every item to your inventory!
